I’m sure many of you are ready for a breather after Australia’s Federal Election and the US Presidential run, but the race to Level 4 of Swinburne’s UN building is well under way.
Endorsed by the incumbent SSU President and General Secretary (neither of whom are recontesting), the EVOLVE campaign launch last night at The Hawthorn Hotel saw dozens of supporters and candidates pour hundreds of dollars into the ticket’s coffers in what is looking to be a hotly contested election next week.
In a boost to start the campaign season, EVOLVE already has seats at the SSU Council waiting for them, with unopposed nominations in seven Union positions, including the General-Secretary (Samuel Roberts) and Welfare Officer (Alexandria McGilvray).
The EVOLVE fundraiser featured a $20 entry fee, a coin wine toss (the closest coin tossed to a bottle of wine won the bottle), and an auction, featuring prizes donated from LGBTI Radio Station Joy FM, Greek Restaurants and family and friends of EVOLVE candidates.
In a public Facebook post thanking event attendees and supporters, EVOLVE President candidate noted, “we [EVOLVE] are so close to reaching our target [donational amount] of $2,000”.
Speaking with 3SSR today, Ms. Tinc clarified that EVOLVE raised “around $1800” after the auction “raised a lot more money than…expected”. Ms. Tinc “felt like [the event] went really well…and brought [the EVOLVE] team together that little bit more”. Many EVOLVE candidates and supporters commented to 3SSR that they were ecstatic with the success of the fundraiser.
Ms. Tinc is campaigning against the incumbent SSU Education Officer, Anthony Osborne, who is contesting the 2017 Presidency under the ticket, Amplify.
Voting for the Swinburne Student Union elections commences next Monday and runs throughout next week at Swinburne’s Hawthorn, Croydon and Wantirna campuses.
